Who can resist chocolate?  I mean, really.

Ramblings of a chocolate fanatic

Sure, there’s peanut butter (unless you’re allergic).  There’s ice cream (unless you’re lactose intolerant).  There’s fois gras (yuck…).  We all have our favorite food, and that’s perfect, but c’mon!  This is chocolate we’re talking about.  Think of the rich, earthy taste of dark chocolate.  Savor it… then think of taking a sip of a good Cabernet Sauvignon.  Or Port.

Drop a bar of Scharffenberger Valrhona chocolate into a double boiler, melt it down, add some cream and maybe a little raspberry preserve.  Think of that on a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream.  You know you can taste it already.

Chocolate is good for you.  Even if it weren’t it wouldn’t matter…. I eat Spam ™ after all.  But it has antioxidants to counter all the free radicals attacking our bodies day in and day out.  It’s like a shiny (well… brown) shield in our epic battle against disease and gene-altering afflictions.  Knowing that, could you still resist chocolate?

I’m on a diet.  Sometimes.  I just went to Las Vegas for a conference.  Being on a diet there is futile, because there are only three things I love to do in Vegas and that’s eat, drink, and see the shows.  So screw it, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.  I figure that goes for calories too.  In the New York New York hotel, there is a giant Hershey’s store called… wait for it… CHOCOLATE WORLD!  Oh. My. God.  There is every Hershey candy there.  They sell bags.  They sell bulk by the pound.  It is heaven on Earth.  The only thing that would make it better is if there were other chocolate makers, but that’s what the Ghirardelli store is for.  I bought one bag of dark (purple wrapping) Kisses for $7.50.  I exercised restraint and didn’t buy 4 bags for $20.  Thank you for your admiration.

Sorry, am I rambling?  Thinking of chocolate tends to do that to me.

Well, there you go.  I love chocolate.  I love it on ice cream, in mousse, and in cakes.  Now if I could only figure out how to get chocolate to pair with Spam ™, I really will be set…

This is fantastic, Dean. In a mere few paragraphs you’ve got my mouth watering. So yes, I do admire your restraint. Remind us to share some of the chocolate port we picked up at a Sonoma winery. In return, we will let you keep all the chocolate Spam.

    But first, some chocolate!

Right there with you Dean! I used to feel guilty about chocolate temptation, and therefore didn’t nearly enjoy it as much as I should have. Then I discovered Recchiuti, Waialua (grown in Hawai’i!), and other artisanal brands and a whole new world opened up. Now I embrace it, revel in it even. But the good stuff is so good, moderation is easy.
